(also Abijah) was a descendant of assigned the eighth of the twenty-four priestly courses established by to organize temple service (1 Chronicles 24). This division, known as 'the course of Abia,' became significant in the New Testament when records that Zechariah, the father of , belonged to it and was serving his course's rotation in when the angel announced the coming birth of John (Luke 1).
