Who or what is this?
Descendants of , the son of and his wife Bilhah. The Danites are repeatedly enumerated in the wilderness censuses (Numbers 1, 2, 10, 26) and receive their original inheritance in the southwest ( 19). When that territory proved insufficient, a large body of Danites migrated to the far north, captured the city of , put it to the sword, burned it, rebuilt it, and renamed it (Judges 18). They set up a carved image there that became a byword for northern idolatry. The tribe is remembered for its warriors, its eventual northern location, and its role in the religious schism under .
